Snack Machine | 2023
Plastic pop tubes, cardboard, 3D printed fixtures, and paint
An interactive "Snack Machine" prop created in two weeks for the short film Sink-Hole (2024) directed by Isaac Salem.
Sink-Hole is a surreal sci-fi comedy about a plumber that falls into an underground labyrinth and must find his way out.
Process
Research
After reading the script and discussing visual themes with the team, I took pictures of the shooting site for reference and used DALLE-3 to quickly generate concepts for director feedback.
Development
Because I was on a limited timeframe, I created simple switches and buttons in CAD to 3D print, and iterated the form directly by rearranging the pieces.
The focal interaction point would be the green button, so I soldered an LED to a micro USB port so it would light up. I also needed to create a slot in the back to drop food through, as well as incorporate orange tubing that could be accessed from both ends to pipe fluid through. The full assembly was coated with white paint. Finishing details included printed dials, laser-cut plexiglass coverings, and weathering using watered down paint to better match the film set context.
